Mitomycin - What is it for

Mitomycin is an intravenous (injected into the vein) chemotherapy that is used for the treatment of certain types of cancer.

What side effects can Mitomycin cause?

Early side effects

Nausea and vomiting may occur 1 – 2 hours after treatment, and may last for 2 – 3 days.
There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed.
Pain or tenderness similar to a burn if the medicine leaks outside the vein.

Delayed side effects

A drop in the blood cell counts may occur 3 to 4 weeks after treatment.
Mouth ulcers and/or tenderness may occur a few days after treatment.
Temporary hair loss may occur but rare.
Purple lines may appear on your fingernails.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

Fever of 38°C or higher, chills or sore throat.
Sore throat, hoarseness or mouth sores.
Pain and itchiness, redness or swelling at or near the injection site.
Unusual bleeding, bruising or black stools; blood in urine; pinpoint red spots on skin.
Pain or burning sensation when passing urine.
