Medical News Staying awake during spine surgery can be a safer treatment option for the elderly When two years of physiotherapy and painkillers failed to improve Mr Teo’s back pain, he was referred to NNI. The 75-year-old was diagnosed with severe spinal degeneration, and his priority was pain relief and a fast recovery from surgery. Dr Thomas Tan, Head & Consultant, Neurosurgery, NNI@SKH, performed awake endoscopic spine surgery - a minimally invasive procedure carried out through keyhole incisions while the patient remains conscious. After the operation, the patient returned home before the end of the day. According to Dr Tan, the procedure is gaining traction in Singapore for its faster recovery times, reduced post-operative pain, and suitability for elderly or high-risk patients who may not tolerate general anaesthesia.

Clinical Assistant Professor Ling Ji Min, Head of Department and Senior Consultant, Neurosurgery, NNI@TTSH has received a national research award to develop a new medical device that will reduce the labour and time spent on treating this life-threatening condition.
