Temasek Foundation-NNI Stroke Memory Rehabilitation (SMaRT) Programme

Synonym(s):

Memory and thinking problems are common after a stroke.

They can start when you are still in hospital, or months later, when you are physically much better.

Common memory and thinking problems after a stroke include:

  • Getting lost when outside the home
  • Forgetting what you are talking about
  • Leaving taps running
  • Forgetting to pay when shopping
  • Not knowing if change is correct after paying
  • Being unable to focus on work or household chores

These memory and thinking problems can be frustrating and make it difficult for you to return to work and look after your family. Without early intervention, these problems get worse over time and can lead to dementia.

There are ways to prevent these problems and improve your memory and thinking skills after a stroke.
