Research Director's Message

Welcome to Research at National Neuroscience Institute (NNI).

Our goals are in the pursuit and advancement of neuroscience research. We aspire to be a leader in Clinical Translational Research Programmes for major neurological diseases. The mission of NNI's research is to improve the quality of life of patients with neurological conditions through empowering knowledge and research innovation. Our research focuses on achieving better understanding of basic physiological and disease mechanisms, discovering and exploring new medical and surgical therapies, and improving health care provision and delivery, through our core programmes, such as, stroke, Parkinson and movement disorders, dementia, and neuro-oncology.

In our pursuit of research opportunities, we look to strategic collaborations with local and international research institutions with the intention of achieving critical mass and benefiting from multidisciplinary expertise. We will continue to engage in competitive research programmes to promote national and international collaboration.

We have a team of dedicated researchers with national and international reputations in their respective fields. Our NNI scientists collaborate extensively with clinicians at our Institute as well as with researchers from various local and overseas institutions. Many of our scientists hold adjunct or joint faculty appointments at local universities including the Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University. Importantly, our scientists and doctors share a common long-term aim in their pursuit of research excellence; to reduce the burden of diseases and improve the quality of life for our patients.

With the close association of our clinical services and basic research laboratories, NNI is a favourable environment for the rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice. Today, NNI provides clinical services for the largest proportion of patients with neurological disorders in Singapore. This positions NNI as an ideal biomedical research hub and conduit for neuroscience research in Singapore.

We are also actively nurturing the next generation of clinician-scientists, clinician-investigators, clinician-innovators, and neuroscientists. Our integrated clinical and translational research programmes and laboratories provide an enriching environment for undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral training in the fields of neuroscience.
