Lubiprostone - What is it for

​Lubiprostone is used to treat constipation.

What side effects can Lubiprostone cause?

Common side effects include:

  • ​Nausea
    • Take this medication with food.
  • Dizziness, fainting or a drop in blood pressure
    • The risk may be increased if you develop diarrhoea or vomiting during treatment. Generally, these side effects go away after some time.
  • Shortness of breath
    • It may occur especially within an hour of the first dose but generally goes away within three hours. It may happen again with repeated doses.
  • Other side effects include stomach discomfort, headaches, sweating and palpitations.

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Stomach pain or cramps that does not go away, inability to pass gas or stool, fever, vomiting or diarrhea during the treatment.

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Before taking Lubiprostone , what precautions must I follow?

​Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies
  • You have liver disease

  • You may take this medication with food and water.
  • Swallow the capsule whole. Do not break apart or chew the capsule.

​If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
