Enzalutamide - What is it for

​Enzalutamide is a medicine that is used to treat metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond prostate gland). It works by blocking the effects of male sex hormones called androgens. Androgens may increase the growth of cancer cells.

Enzalutamide - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Enzalutamide cause?

  • Muscle, bone or joint pain
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Swelling of your hands or feet
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Hot flushes
  • If this occurs, take the t​ablet at bedtime. If night sweats interfere with sleep, try taking the tablet in the morning.
  • ​Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea or constipation may occur  

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Skin rashes, hives or itching
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing
  • Confusion or falling
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Side effects become severe

Before taking Enzalutamide , what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you:
    • Are on any other medicines e.g. warfarin
    • Have any other medical conditions e.g. heart problems, high blood pressure, history of seizures or epilepsy.
  • Use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 3 months after stopping treatment.

How should Enzalutamide be used?

Enzalutamide is a capsule, to be taken by mouth once a day at the same time every day. Swallow whole and take the exact number of capsules as instructed by your doctor.

It can be taken with or without food, with a glass of water or juice.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

​If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However if it is near to your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing time. Do not take double dose.​

What should I do if I overdose?

​If you overdose on this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.
