This talk describes the roles of programmed axon death in disease. Blocking it in animal and cell culture models prevents axon degeneration in injury and disease, including glaucoma models. Its aberrant activation causes disease or increases axon vulnerability. There are increasing signs that this occurs in human disease too. The second part of the talk focusses on the well-understood mechanism, its targeting for drug development and the potential for highly effective treatments.
