Calcium is universally used throughout phylogeny and by all cell types for signal transduction. Spatially and temporally controlled changes in calcium concentration are critical to the normal function of cells. Calcium enters the cell via calcium-permeable ion channels spanning plasma membrane. Our research work focuses on the physiology and pathophysiology of ion channels in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and voltage-gated calcium channels. Currently, we are investigating stroke, cerebral ischemia and other CNS disorders.
