INTRODUCTION

The Epidemiology and Clinical Research Unit (ECRU) of the National Neuroscience Institute was formed to provide a hub for epidemiological and clinical research in the clinical neurosciences. The ECRU will also serve to facilitate the process of establishing and conducting clinical trials at the NNI by providing suitable manpower, office space, co-ordinating facilities and support.

CURRENT EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDIES

A community-based prevalence survey of neurological diseases in Singapore.

Aim: This study is to determine the prevalence of 4 major neurological diseases in the older Singapore population - dementia, epilepsy, parkinsonism and stroke.

Methodology: The study population was drawn from a stratified random sample of 25,000 study subjects aged 50 years and above living in the central part of Singapore. Respondants were screened using validated screening tools during face-to-face interviews. Those screened positive were invited to a Phase II screen for definitive diagnosis.

CONCLUSION

The National Neuroscience Institute has a talented group of clinicians, scientists and trials coordinators capable of conducting clinical trials to Good Clinical Practice standards at both campuses. As we have access to large patient populations, swift enrolment into trials is the norm.

Our current focus is on developing a regional trials coordinating centre for larger scale trials as well as enhancing our capability for conducting increasingly sophisticated Phase II studies utilising biomarkers such as neuroimaging, neurochemistry and molecular biology. We also aim to develop further synergy with our basic neuroscience research.
