National Neuroscience Institute Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

Singapore, 18 July, 2009 - The National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) marks its 10th Anniversary on 18 July 2009. The NNI is the national centre for referrals in the neurosciences, where it is one of the national centres to be established as part of the government’s blueprint for enhanced specialist healthcare.

The NNI officially started functioning on 1 June 1999, with the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery forming the foundations of clinical service and supported by the only Neuroradiology Department in Singapore that is equipped with the state-of the-art technology.

Over the past years, we have established ourselves as one of the best and trusted leaders in neuroscience care in Asia. We have made strong improvements in our clinical services, particularly in the areas of Parkinson’s disease and stroke. NNI has been accredited by the American National Parkinson Foundation as an International Centre of Excellence for our clinical expertise in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease. In the area of Stroke, the most significant development is the collaborative Acute Thrombolysis Stroke Service provided by the departments of Neurology and Neuroradiology, where NNI’s Neuroradiology Department became the first imaging centre in Singapore provide 24-hour MRI scanning for acute stroke patients.

We have developed the world’s first digitally integrated neurosurgical centre to provide the full range of treatment options combined within one facility, using the latest in neuroimaging for better patient outcomes and results. Since our inception, NNI research has earned much prestige for their work and projects, some of which are among the most advanced in the field. Ongoing research projects are being carried out in the areas of neuro-degenerative diseases, acute brain injury, stroke, surgical navigation, and neuro-oncology.

Our patients will always remain a top priority for us, as we continue to do our best to improve and provide the best neuroscience care we can to all our patients.

In conjunction with our 10th Anniversary, the NNI is organising a public forum : Your Brain and Nervous System – How can they affect you? on 18 July, Saturday from 2 pm – 4 pm. The forum will cover topics on common neurological conditions and its treatment options.
