The Neurodiagnostic Laboratory provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic investigations to aid physicians in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of Epilepsy, Strokes, Parkinson’s Disease, Neuromuscular and other neurological diseases.

  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Cerebrovascular (Ultrasound)
  • Autonomic Function Tests
  • Botulinum Toxin Clinic
  • Evoked Potentials (EP)

Electromyography (EMG)

The electromyography laboratory at NNI is serviced by a team of specially trained neurologists and technologists.

An average of 2,000 patients are seen yearly. Tests available at this laboratory are:

  1. Nerve conduction study
  2. Needle electromyography
  3. Repetitive nerve stimulation
  4. Single Fibre EMG
  5. Quantitative sensory testing

Electromyography is useful in the diagnosis and management of the following conditions:

  • Common Entrapment neuropathies, such as Carpal Tunnel
    syndrome and Ulnar Neuropathy
  • Neck/back pain with radiculopathies
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Muscle disorders such as inflammatory myopathy and
    muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Motor neuron disease

Electroencephalography (EEG)

At the EEG section, a team of experienced electroencephalographers and technologists performs and interpretes all studies. An average of 1,500 cases is performed yearly. Common referring diagnoses are:

  • Seizures
  • Blackouts
  • Syncope
  • Encephalopathies
  • Sleep Disorders (Multiple Sleep Latency Tests)

Cerebrovascular (Ultrasound)

The cerebrovascular ultrasound laboratory is licensed by Ministry of Health Licensing & Accreditation Unit. It is staffed by stroke neurologists and technologists with expertise in neurosonology.

Common indications for referral include:

  • Ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack
  • Amaurosis fugax, ocular ischemic syndrome
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • Neck bruit, pulsatile neck mass
  • Suspected right-to-left intracardiac shunt
  • Pre-CABG assessment, post-carotid endarterectomy
    assessment

Autonomic Function Tests

  • Dizziness from postural hypotension
  • Urinary symptoms, constipation, dry mouth/eyes, hyper/hypohidrosis from suspected autonomic failure
  • Autonomic neuropathies like diabetic neuropathy
  • Parkinsonism

Botulinum Toxin Clinic

Botulinum toxin injections for the treatment of neurological conditions are available. This service is run by movement disorder neurologists. Common conditions treated are:

  • Hemifacial spasms
  • Blepharospasms
  • Neck and limb dystonias
  • Spasticity

Evoked Potentials (EP)

Evoked potentials help locate lesions and detect silent abnormalities in the sensory nervous system. The following tests are performed at the neurodiagnostic laboratory.

A) Diagnostic

1. Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) - Median and Tibial SSEP
2. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAER)
3. Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)

Common referrals include:

  • Optic Neuropathy
  • Amblyopia, retinopathy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Factitious blindness
  • Malingering
  • Coma

B) Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM)

IOM is the intraoperative evaluation of the nervous system. It applies technology from electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), evoked potentials (EP) and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) to monitor the nervous system. This service is provided for surgeries involving the central and peripheral nervous system when nervous tissue is at risk of injury. Depending on the type of surgery, different monitoring modalities are used.

Applications of IOM include:

  • Cerebral surgery (tumor)
  • Spine surgery (decompression, pedicle screw placement)
  • Cranial Nerve Surgery (skull base lesion, microvascular
    decompression)
  • Peripheral Nerve Surgery (trauma & entrapment)
