Extravasation of iodinated contrast media may occur during intravenous injection in Computed Tomography (CT) scans. This occurs when contrast is infused into the surrounding tissue, usually via leakage from the fragile vein or injection site. At NNI Neuroradiology department, our staff are trained in the administration of intravenous injections.

The occurrence of extravasation at NNI Neuroradiology dept for Year 2007 to 2010 is an average of 0.10% of the total number of CT scans involving contrast media, as shown in the graph below. In a study "Frequency, Management, and Outcome of Extravasation of Nonionic Iodinated Contrast Medium in 69 657 Intravenous Injections" (Wang et al, 2007), the occurence of extravasation reported is an average of 0.70%.
