Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in Singapore and in many other parts of the world. With the aging population, the number of people developing a stroke is set to rise. Fortunately, there are a number of effective interventions which have been proven to reduce the risk of the first as well as subsequent strokes, and to improve post-stroke recovery.
The World Stroke Organisation, which is affiliated with the World Health Organisation, has declared 29 October 2008 as World Stroke Day (WSD). The annual Singapore Stroke Conference, now in its 10th year, is THE scientific and educational forum for stroke in Singapore, highlighting the advances in prevention, treatment and outcomes of stroke. This year’s conference is held as part of the WSD events. The programme is themed: "Neurorestoration – Reducing Recurrence, Enhancing Recovery". It will cover important clinical concepts in stroke prevention, acute interventions, restorative treatments, nursing and rehabilitation.
The conference will provide opportunities to meet with experts in stroke and a unique occasion for those who manage stroke to update their knowledge on a wide range of topics. The conference will be of interest to family physicians, specialists, nurses and allied health staff, as well as health care administrators and policy makers from all levels.
